The PE Curriculum Intent

The purpose of the PE curriculum is develop physical competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. We aim to build on key skills taught in Key Stages 1 and 2, with students becoming more competent, confident and expert in their knowledge, understanding and techniques. We aim for students to develop their confidence and interest to engage in competitive sports and lead healthy, active lives in and out of school and in later life. Our core principles, which drive all our staff are to engage, develop and be active.

Physical Education is an integral part of the curriculum and research proves that schools who provide a strong PE curriculum often achieve higher grades in other academic subjects. Cross curricular links to Mathematics and English are embedded within the PE curriculum and additional life skills such as team work, communication skills and expressing creativity are vital to be successful in Physical Education.

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all students:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

The BTEC examination subject from year 9 to 11 is developed to;

  • encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities
  • give students a wider understanding and appreciation of health-related fitness, sports and exercise through a selection of optional specialist units
  • encourage students to develop their people, communication, planning and team-working skills by having the opportunity to select from optional units available in the qualification structure
  • provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees
  • give opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation employees to achieve a nationally recognised level 1 or level 2 vocationally-specific qualification
  • give full-time students the opportunity to progress to other vocational qualifications, such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences, or on to GCE AS or A level, and, in due course, to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector
  • give students the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
