English Curriculum Intent

The purpose of the English Curriculum is to ensure students can speak, read and write fluently and confidently. Cockburn provides a cumulative reading curriculum to build students’ knowledge, cultural capital and promote reading for pleasure. Reading in depth is organised across 4 strands of the Literary canon.

Cockburn provides deliberate practice of writing for a range of purposes with explicit taught vocabulary to close the word gap and attainment gap so students can write accurately, cohesively and at length. Written accuracy will be explicitly taught in order for students to communicate precisely and effectively.

Cockburn provides and supports regular opportunity through the curriculum for students to demonstrate their knowledge orally and develop their spoken language skills.
